Woman's Family Blames Husband's Religion For Death



KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After several months of investigation, Jackson County prosecutors announced Monday that they will not file charges in the deaths of a Lee's Summit policeman's wife who refused medical treatment and her stillborn baby.

Let me ask YOU a question. If your wife or child had an accident and was dying before your eyes, could you sit back and do NOTHING but watch them die? Just shrug it off as "God's will"? When a single 911 call and a simple procedure could have saved their lives?

Could you do that to someone you claimed to love?

If your child or spouse were hit by a car and were lying bleeding and unconscious in the middle of the street, would you let them die and tell authorities that "They didn't ask for any help."?

If you were in an accident, would you want Caleb Horner to be the First Responder? Would you want Caleb waiting for you to regain consciousness and become lucid enough to ask for help before he called for an ambulance?

If Caleb Horner was shot in the line of duty, do you think he would break with his brother's teachings and call for help? Or would he just lay there bleeding and praying?

Call him and let him know that YOU KNOW that he is just covering a cop's ass. DEMAND that he charge Caleb Horner with negligent homicide and charge his brother, John Horner, as an accessory to the crime.

If you think that Caleb Horner is unfit to be a police officer because he idley sat by and watched his daughter and wife die when he could have saved their lives by simply picking up the phone and placing a call, then PLEASE send a message!

Caleb (and John) deserve to be on the receiving end of that justice.

Birthday Honored At Misty Horner's Grave

"LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - A grave site birthday celebration was held for Misty Horner Wednesday night.

Horner is the wife of a Lee's Summit Police officer currently on leave while prosecutors investigate Misty's death. In January, she died after a botched home birth. She and her husband refused medical assistance. But Misty's parents, Gail and Darrell Mansfield, want justice.

Wednesday night, dozens joined the Mansfield's at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lee's Summit. Standing in cold winds, they gathered around Misty's grave. It was a somber celebration.

"Tonight is her birthday," said Darrell Mansfield, Misty's father.

"She's been gone 10 months now," said Gail Mansfield, Misty's mother. "It's hard to even get up the next day to even try to... we don't even know what we're supposed to do anymore. That was our baby girl."

Misty would be 31-years-old. But, 10 months ago, she died from an infection caused by complications from a stillbirth. After her unborn daughter Sydney died, Misty and her husband, Caleb refused to get medical treatment for religious reasons.

Her family believes she was brainwashed. Police have not charged Caleb with any crime, but Misty's family blames him for her death.

"Misty was not in a cult," said Gail Mansfield. "That was not Misty."

"It's been very hard. It's been hard for everybody," said Selma Mansfield, Misty's Aunt.

To ease their burden and get through their first Thanksgiving holiday without Misty, the Mansfield family and friends surrounded her grave, celebrating the precious memories she left them.

"She's very important to us and we'll celebrate it every year," said Misty's sister Kim Park. "She's in our thoughts continuously. We love her. We miss her."

Caleb Horner remains on leave with the Lee's Summit Police Department until Jackson County Prosecutors finish investigating the circumstances of his wife's death. A spokesman for the prosecutor says nothing is imminent."

On Wednesday, the family of Misty Horner remembered her on her 31st birthday. KMBC's Dan Weinbaum reported that loved ones gathered at Horner's graveside memorial to sing "Happy Birthday" to her.

Horner was married to a Lee's Summit police officer. She declined medical attention during a childbirth in her home. The child was stillborn and Horner later died.

Doctors said Horner had an infection that could have been treated, but it wasn't because of her husband's religious beliefs.

Horner's parents blame their son-in-law, Caleb Horner.

"This here is unacceptable. It's hard, unbearable, day in, day out," said Darrell Mansfield, Misty's father.

"You have a hole in your heart and you don't know what to do," said Gail Mansfield, Misty's mother. "It's hard to get up some days. I don't know what to do without her."

The case is in the hands of the Jackson County prosecutor. A representative said the case is still under review.

INTRODUCTION

On Saturday, November 26, 2006, Misty Horner went into labor.

A week later, on December 1, 2006, Misty Horner was giving birth to a breach baby with an umbilical cord wrapped around it's neck.

Her husband, Caleb Horner, a Lee's Summit police officer, had denied her any pre-natal medical care because he was following the religious teachings of his brother, John Horner.

John doesn't believe in doctors, or medicine. Living and dying is "God's Will".

Caleb, in an apparent crisis of faith while his baby was strangling on it's own umbilicle cord, administered an emergency episiotomy to his wife with a pair of scissors.

The baby was stillborn.

Caleb also denied Misty any post-natal care.

By January 9, 2007, Misty was dead from septic shock.

As of this writing, no one is being held accountable for the death of a mother and her child.

A husband and father, a police officer sworn to protect and serve the public, stood by and did nothing as first his daughter, then his wife, needlessly suffered and died.

He is still on the payroll of the Lee's Summit Police Department and no charges have been filed against him.

These were the events that outraged me and caused me to create this blog.
